The water quality in your pond is going to
depend on many different factors. Remember, your pond is a natural
ecosystem, and as such it will take some time for it to adjust and
balance out. Please be patient! Because your water garden is
a natural eco-system, there is usually not a quick fix single solution
to water quality problems. Your pond will get better as it ages.
The longer it is functioning naturally, the more it is just like mother
nature intended it to be. Do not add any water treatments products
to your pond that have chemicals in them. Even the smallest amount
of chemicals, even chemicals that are labeled as fish safe, will disturb
the balance of your pond. These chemicals not only kill the algae,
they also kill the beneficial bacteria. The same holds true for UV
sterilization. These chemical and UV products can be used in your
pond, but then you should plan on using them for the life of your pond,
because the system will no longer be balanced and will no longer be able
to maintain itself. The distinct advantage to having patience,
adding your bacteria and enzymes, and letting mother nature take her
course is that eventually your pond will balance out, and at that point
it will require little to no help from you to maintain its beautiful,
clear water.
